Swiffer Duster Unscented Refill 16 Count Box Review

Dust dust dust in city living.I could live without this little gem as I would not know how long and how arduous other methods I would have to resort to get clean my home and space.I don't have to follow through with polish and with one quick swop, the job is done. You know once the little gem needs replacing as the dust flies around and is no longer clinging to the cloth. But it is very economical and goes a long way, which helps a little for the environment.

Procter & Gamble #40509 Swiffer Duster Starter Review

Procter & Gamble #40509 Swiffer Duster Starter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Until this weekend, I would spend hours dusting my home every week.As a 3/4 time student, full-time worker, and full-time mom, I can tell you that there are better things I can be doing on my "off" time than dusting.(Sigh, if I only had time to read or hike...)

Not only am I an extremely discriminating consumer, but I'm a neatnik as well.I assumed the Swiffer Dusters were going to be another waste of resources to add to the growing pile of junk that manufacturers put out on a seemingly daily basis by the metric tons, but I had to try them; I was desperate for a solution. If I could only find something that worked as well as a cloth and Pledge, something that was easy, something that was more efficient...

Boy did I find it!This product is a real gem!!

The handle is made of plastic parts, but it's sturdy - and EXTENDABLE.It's able to easily reach in places that I was never able to get to without either moving heavy pieces of furniture or contorting my body into very unnatural positions. The tip of the handle - where the actual duster goes - is a little flexible. This also only added to the functionality and performance of the product. Not only that, but you can adjust the position of the head; you can use it straight or at a number of angles!

The duster itself is more effective than I ever imagined. It's easy as cake to assemble:just fluff and place on the end of the handle. It seems to just soak up every piece of dust in it's path - a thirsty little thing! It doesn't just push the dust around or throw it back into the air; it *captures* it.I used it both dry and with a dusting product; both worked equally as well.

Some manufacturers load their products with useless features, but not these guys and gals.It seems like the Swiffer folks really did their research with this product.Every single feature has a use.Believe me, I used them all!

Not only did I save time (without a doubt, by 50%; likely, more. I should have timed myself), I also dusted more areas than I would have with my traditional dust cloth and polish:walls, ceilings, baseboards, window sills ... every single piece of electronics.

In a fraction of the time previously spent, this left everything so clean that I felt a tear starting to form.A bit dramatic? No way! Why?Because with the help of the Swiffer Dusters and the Vileda mop system (another product I picked up over the same weekend) I was faced with something a bit foreign to me:extra time.I could finally pick up a book - actual literature - and READ.

The only thing I wasn't crazy about is the disposability of the product.I hate putting more stuff in the landfills. It would be great if the Swiffer guys and gals could put out a product with the same features and performance but that was washable. That's not to detract from the review though; I'm still sold on the product - though I'll get every single bit of use out of a dusting head before tossing it.

And, one more thing, the product sort of catches on lamp shades. When doing my shades, I used the flat part of the dusting head and it seemed to work fine. It's terrific on venetian blinds though!!!!

Hoover Platinum Type-Q HEPA Vacuum Bags, 2-Pack, AH10000 Review

Hoover Platinum Type-Q HEPA Vacuum Bags, 2-Pack, AH10000
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used mine for over five months before I had to replace it - not because it was full, but because the air the vacuum was expelling was no longer fresh. (I assume that very fine particles of dust had clogged the bag preventing it from filtering properly.) I used the canister to vacuum out the inside and the bottom of the upright, replaced the bag, and it began filtering like new again. Now I use the canister to vacuum out the bottom of the upright on a regular basis, and replace the bag whenever the exhaust is no longer fresh. The 4 for 3 promotion makes this an excellent item to buy on Amazon.

Product Description:
Ideal for allergy sufferers, this set of two HEPA vacuum-cleaner bags effectively traps 99.97-percent of dust and pollens down to .3 microns. Because over-filled vacuum bags lead to reduced suction, vacuum-cleaner manufacturers recommend changing bags frequently in order to maintain optimal performance. These bags offer an extra-large size for maximum loading capacity, which means fewer bag changes necessary, plus they provide self-sealing closures that contain unseemly puffs of dust and debris. For use with a Hoover UH30010COM lightweight upright vacuum cleaner, the set of two vacuum bags measures approximately 6-4/5 by 2-4/5 by 9-3/5 inches.

iRobot 110 Dirt Dog Workshop Robot Review

iRobot 110 Dirt Dog Workshop Robot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Granted, I've had this thing for less than a week, but I can't quit raving about it.

I got the Dirt Dog for my enclosed patio, which is home to 12 messy caged parakeets and is also, of course, where my 4 cats like to hang out.I chose the Dirt Dog over the Roomba because I thought the sweeper would work better on the unfinished concrete than a vacuum unit, and it was cheaper.I liked the idea of the larger crud-holder than the vacuum, and I thought maybe it would be less tempramental, too.

The first time I turned it on, it wandered around exploring---I quickly learned that the fringed cotton rugs would have to go (no biggie, they just trap dirt anyway).I didn't move a lot of furniture---wanted to see how it would get along without much prep work on my part.

It quickly became my "Little Buddy" as it got stuck, or wrapped a string around its brushes and gently whimpered "Uh-Oh".I responded like the silly thing was one of my kids: "What's up, Little Buddy?Did you get caught on something?"Pathetic.

Anyway, he soon seemed to "learn" how to handle the edge of the platform my desk chair sits on and scoot under the shelves where the birds drop seeds & feathers.I learned to put barriers up so he couldn't get into trouble on the indoor-outdoor carpet that trends to unravel. We trained each other.

He's noisy...but I got used to it.The floor was looking better!

The cats seemed fascinated, but not afraid---they didn't freak out, just watched and stayed out of the way.At one point one of them actually sat on the floor and watched while he worked all around her.

By the time he finished, I was thrilled with my utterly brilliant purchase.I pulled out the hepa DustBuster http://www.amazon.com/review/R3DJL18LOJDRWI/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm and sucked up what little was missed or out of his range.Walking on the floor in my bare feet, I could feel how clean it really was---as clean as it gets when I spend half a day working on it with the big Shop Vac!

Next test:The bachelor son's house, equipped with three shedding dogs.Buddy whipped back and forth under two couches and a chair, scooping up fuzzballs like a champ. He cleaned the tile, the wood, and the (unfringed) area rug.He wanted to do the bedroom carpet, but I was afraid that might be just TOO much, even for him.

Buddy's next challenge was our garage---smooth concrete, but VERY UNclean. This is what he's built for, right? We set a timer and checked up on him about every 10 minutes to make sure he hadn't gotten stuck somewhere or pulled something into his brushes that made him stop.It took him a while, and I could tell by his yellow light that he was getting really tired, but he got it CLEAN.I emptied out his "dustpan" about 5 times.Yesterday I did some spray-painting in the garage, and the whole newly-clean floor was soon covered with overspray. So I put Buddy back to work.He swept up all the fine paint dust off the floor---no whining, no dust mask, no beer break. And now all that dust isn't getting tracked into the house.I can hardly wait to turn him loose the next time there are tiny metal shavings all over the floor from some drill-press project...

TBD is how well he'll last, but can you tell I'm pretty pleased with our newest family member?

Update June 23 2007:

It's now been six months, and we're on our second "Little Buddy".After a few weeks, Buddy I began just wandering around in a circle; it turned out he had an incurable wheel issue. It IS annoying that IRobot won't cover postage on a warranty return, but it was worth the hassle to get a new Little Buddy. The house just wasn't the same without him.....

Buddy II seems to be an even better and more energetic unit than his late, lamented sibling. He has earned the weekly task of sweeping our outdoor concrete courtyard. He gets a little rambunctious launching himself at some of the potted plants from time to time, but he does a wonderful job of cleaning up dirt, dust and leaves. It still amazes me how much stuff he picks up from what appears to be a pretty clean surface.

Buddy II has also been called into service for the above-mentioned drill press project. The scene begins as I step barefoot into the garage.I return hissing, swearing and bleeding on the floor. As I head for the tweezer drawer, I snarl to my husband, "Get Buddy! You've been drilling metal again and haven't cleaned up!"So Buddy has now succesfully taken on the role of marriage counselor.

He's also been on a couple of sleepovers at friends' houses, where he delighted his hostesses by cleaning their patios, decks and garages. One friend was so impressed she asked for her own Buddy as a birthday gift.He was apparently VERY well-behaved, even without parental supervision.

Buddy continues to work tirelessly, asking for nothing but a charged battery, a clean brush and an occasional (chaperoned) date with the air-compressor.

Swiffer Dusters Refills, 10-Count Boxes (Pack of 3) Review

Swiffer Dusters Refills, 10-Count Boxes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As of the time I am writing this, this three pack set of Swiffer duster refills is more economical than buying three single boxes of refills on Amazon; and the duster refills never become so old that they "expire!" These fit easily onto the Swiffer duster handle and they really do an excellent job of trapping dust, hair or even small particles of food in hard to reach places. I am simply amazed that these dusters do so much more than just move the dust around--these things actually pick up the dust, hair and more and make `em stick to the duster like anything! This helps a lot when you can't vacuum certain places.

While you can use these duster refills to dust, you can also use them to clean record albums. I am a huge music enthusiast and Swiffer dusters help tremendously when I need to clean the dust and light dirt residue off a vinyl record album. You can use the duster again and again on quite a few record albums before they begin to discolor; when the duster turns from a light blue to a light grey it's safe to assume that you need to switch to a new duster.

You can also just use the duster without its handle. The duster refill fits easily in your hand without its handle; and this can be useful when you're dusting off a low coffee table or an end table that has a book on it; indeed the duster refill can often work well alone without its handle when cleaning other surfaces. However, I wouldn't use this with cleansers such as Windex. For example, when cleaning a mirror with glass cleaner you might prefer to use something else like a soft, absorbent yet inexpensive washcloth or perhaps a soft paper towel.

I highly recommend the Swiffer duster refill packages for dusting around the house and other jobs--including what may be lesser known uses like cleaning old vinyl record albums. You can't go wrong!

Vicks Ultrasonic Humidifier - V-5100-N Review

Vicks Ultrasonic Humidifier - V-5100-N
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After reading several reviews of humidifiers that all gave mixed opinions I ignored all of them and picked up this humidifier at a local drug store for $32. This humidifier is small, approximately 11"Wx6"Dx13"H, making it suitable to put on the floor or on a counter. It consists of two main parts, a white plastic base and a clear blue plastic container. The base has two sliding switches. One turns the unit on/off and the other adjusts the amount of water vapor being released in to the air. The blue container sits on top of the base and has a handle on top and a round screw-on part on the bottom to fill the container. It also comes with a filter that goes in the base. There is a round piece on top of the container that turns to adjust and direct the stream of water vapor. Pros: 1. In my opinion it is quiet, much quieter than the Bemis wicking humidifier I previously had. The sound level is comparable to a table top fan. It does make water noises though which I find soothing but could be an annoyance. 2. It runs for a long time without refilling. On the lowest setting 1 container full of water will last a couple days of continous run time. On the highest setting, it needs to be refilled once a day. 3. It has no wick, which would start to smell in the old humidifier I had. 4. No chemicals need to be added to keep scum from growing in it. 5. You can see the water vapor being released in to the air (so you know its working). 6. See through container. You don't have to open anything to see how much water is left. 7. Container fits in kitchen sink to be refilled. 8. Relatively easy to clean. Cons: 1. It has no automatic shut off when the water runs out or when the air has reached the desired humidity. 2. When the container is picked up to be refilled it drips so you need a towel with you. When the unit is running, the water empties out of the container into the base where it is turned into water vapor. So when you remove the container the base is still full of water. 3. It needs to be cleaned regularly, once a week at least unless you don't mind the scum that grows on it. The base has corners that you need a Q-tip to clean. It is recommended that it be cleaned with a damp cloth and a bleach and water solution and then rinsed well. We have extremely soft water so I don't know how long the filter that comes with the humidifier will last or how well it works in places with hard water. I would recommend this humidifier.

Water is one nutrient that all forms of life must have to survive. All functions of your body require sufficient moisture to work properly. When your body does not have sufficient moisture, it functions poorly. Dry, arid climatic conditions are usually the culprit. Colds and flu can further cause dehydration.
Colds and flu begin making their seasonal rounds during fall and winter. Part of the reason for increased respiratory illnesses during this time is because the humidity level in the air reaches its yearly lows. Central heating units in homes and offices further remove moisture from the air. The relative humidity may drop to as low as 10% - drier than the air in the Sahara Desert. Most people experience problems when the relative humidity drops below 25%. A comfortable humidity level should not be higher than 50%.
The Vicks® Ultrasonic Humidifier helps combat this excessive dryness, providing these benefits:
Keeps your respiratory system moist, allowing it to fight off bacteria, viruses and pollutants.
Relieves cold, flu and hay fever symptoms
Relieves dry, irritated and itching skin and eyes.
Relieves coughs and dry, scratchy throat.
Helps you breathe better and sleep more comfortably.
Stops dryout damage to plants, paintings and furniture.
Saves you money on your heating bills, since proper humidity lets you
