Dirt Devil Dynamite Plus Upright Vacuu, Review

Dirt Devil Dynamite Plus Upright Vacuu,
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this vacuum for thirty bucks so keep that in mind. There are units out there that cost ten times that. So how does the Dynamite Plus stack up?It sucks!Very, very well.I don't think I have ever used a vaccum that had such powerful suction. I bought a Dirt Devil cordless unit (the one that no one seems to like) about a year ago and it was garbage. I wondered if anyone really needed cordless while in the confines of their own home. Most likely not. Why not trade the dubious benefits of cordless for maximum sucking power? For the price there is proably no vacuum made that is more powerful. So why only 4 stars? Despite a vacuum that seems well built, convenient, light, bagless, portable, etc., there is one thing that is insanely ridiculous about the Dynamite Plus' design. All of that powerful suckiing power shoots right out a front grill of the vacuum.Like a tornado!!!!The first time I used it was in the kitchen it it literally blew all of the photos and notes off my refrigerator. The next time bordered on slapstick comedy if I could have considered it funny. I was vacuuming the hearth of my fireplace and the tornado-like exhaust fan blew ashes from the fireplace all over my living room!!!Who in their right mind would design a vacuum with a jet engine strong exhaust fan right in front pointing at the very dust and dirt you are going to vacuum?Final thought ... the plastic recepticle fills up very fast. I vacuumed what I thought was a clean tile floor in the kitchen and the dirt container was full. I emptied it and vacuumed my staircase and the dirt bag was full.Is this a bad thing? How can it be? The Dynamite Plus is sucking in dirt that I didn't even know existed. That's the whole reason I vacuum. So I would rate this as the best bargain of any vacuum I have ever seen except for that silly design flaw. It's not at all a reason to not purchase this vacuum. You just have to know how to avoid pointing it at things like fireplace ashes. Bottom line is I have never owned a vacuum with as much suction. This thing is dirt cheap for what it does.

Hoover Windtunnel Anniversary Upright Vacuum, Bagless, U5786900 Review

Hoover Windtunnel Anniversary Upright Vacuum, Bagless, U5786900
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I highly recommend this vacuum. I received it two weeks ago after purchasing on Amazon and it is hands down the most superior vacuum I have ever owned, and definitely outperforms other vacuums I have paid a lot more for.

I always shop the field and do fairly extensive research for all consumer purchases. We consulted Consumer Reports and this model ranked fairly high in overall performance yet had a reasonable price tag. We have about 1800 square feet of carpet, most of it medium-pile. We have one australian shepard, three manx cats, and a two-year-old child, so pet hair and dander pick-up were important to us, as well as filtering.

This model comes in a bagged version, the bagless version (the one I bought), and a bagless self-propelled version. I found the bagged version in some local stores, but I am not interested in a bagged vacuum. My local Costco carried the self-propelled version, but it was very very heavy and besides I just don't understand why the self-propelled feature even exists.

This vacuum is very quiet for it's power. It has exceedingly powerful suction. The dirt sensor has two modes - normal and sensitive. The sensitive setting is truly microscopically sensitive. The vacuum is relatively light weight for its size. Either way, this feature works and it is helpful in high-traffic areas.

Best Feature #1: The canister is almost "self-cleaning". You have to see it to understand, but there are two chambers...the first chamber contains the primary filter, and then all the medium and course particulate and hair and whatnot fill the second chamber. To empty, you just drop the bottom like most canisters, but the difference is that there is nothing in the second chamber for the course matter to get caught up on so it just empties right out without your having to fuss with it, and then the filter (this is genius) rotates via an exterior handle that unfolds from the canister. You spin the filter, and it spins against a plastic tab inside the canister, causing all the fine particulate to just drop out the bottom. When you are done you canister is almost brand new again, and you are dust-free and NOT breathing a bunch of crap!

Best Feature #2: I don't know how this is happening, but this vacuum rolls so easily it FEELS like it is self-propelled. Only it's not. I think it must have exceedingly high quality wheels.

Our house smells better after running this vacuum. We breath easier. This vacuum is so good I would by it new every six months if I had to. We paid about $180 with shipping, an absolute bargain given its performance and features. Oh yeah, the detachable pet hair attachment actually works!

Product Description:
Equipped with patented WindTunnel technology, this bagless upright vacuum delivers powerful, deep-down cleaning performance. It uses three distinct air channels to lift and trap dirt, keeping it from scattering back into the carpet, so dirt ends up in the cleaner not on the floor. With red and green lights, its embedded DirtFinder system indicates areas that may need more cleaning attention. The green "clean" light remains on while vacuuming except when the detector senses a larger amount of dirt; then the red "dirty" light will illuminate to suggest additional vacuuming in the area until the light changes back to green. The unit also traps 99.97-percent of dust and pollens down to 0.3 microns in size thanks to its HEPA filter. Even more, it provides a deluxe stretch hose, a complete on-board tool set for above-floor cleaning, and a pet-hair tool with rotating brushes that effectively removes stubborn pet hair and dirt from upholstery and carpeted stairs. Other thoughtful details include non-marring wheels with bearings for lower push effort on carpet and safe use on bare floors, an ergonomic D-grip handle for added comfort and control, and a bottom-empty dirt container that helps keep hands clean. The unit also comes with fingertip on/off power control, five-position height adjustment, edge-cleaning bristles, and a no-touch filter-cleaning system for enhanced performance, as well as a headlight and a 31-foot power cord. The vacuum cleaner measures 13 by 15 by 45 inches and carries a three-year limited warranty.

Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Dual-Cyclonic Upright Vacuum, 3920 Review

Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Dual-Cyclonic Upright Vacuum, 3920
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased one of these fellas today after having just returned my Dyson. Yes, that's right, I RETURNED MY DYSON! To be honest, I am still scratching my head as to why so many people throw praise at the Dyson. I had one of their "Animal" vacuums for one day, and although it was a nice product... really, is it worth almost $500? I mean, I am talking about a LOT of money here, so why should you spend that much money on a vacuum cleaner?

The simple answer is that you don't have to. The Dyson Animal picked up just a small amount of debris from my fully-carpeted apartment when I tried it out. The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser was almost half-full after I used it earlier today, only 12 hours after having using the Dyson.

I'm not sure what to make of this, to be honest. The Bissell (which costs about 1/3 the price of the Dyson) seems to do the job much better. Although the unit is quite bulky, and requires some assembly (the instructions were a joke), I have much cleaner floors as a result. And my biggest peeve about the Dyson was that, after paying all that money for a product that was called "The Animal," I still had to pay an extra $69 for the pet hair attachment! Is it me, or is someone trying to rip me off here?(Edit: I have been told that one of the Dyson Animal vacuums comes equipped with the aforementioned attachment).

As for the Bissell, it comes with all of the attachments that you will ever need, and did a great job on my upholstery as well as my carpets. Although the hose isn't as long as the Dyson, I was able to clean everything that I needed to clean without any setbacks.

My conclusion is this - if you believe that a Mercedes Benz is the best car out there because of its price tag, then you will probably be better off with a Dyson. However, if you just want a vacuum cleaner that does a decent job regardless of how much it costs, then go with the Bissell.

Simply put, my Bissell Pet Hair Eraser vacuum cleaner does a better job than the Dyson Animal, plus I have an extra $300 in my pocket.

Now, does that seem like a no-brainer to you?-Update 04/04/2009-

People keep asking me how the vacuum is performing now, so I'm going to address this matter.I'm still happy with my purchase and stand by it.No, the Pet Hair Eraser is not perfect, which is why I gave it four stars instead of five. However, it does a great job of cleaning my carpets, still, and I have only had to replace the belt once because of my own mistake.Looking at the other reviews, it seems like people either love it or hate it.My advice, if you are unsure, would be to purchase one from a nearby store so that you can return it if you are not happy.

-Update 10/12/2009-

The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser finally passed away just recently. So, we managed to get two years out of it.Some of you will think that is good for a $150 vacuum cleaner, whereas others will have higher expectations. As for me, I think that we got more than our money's worth. It performed great until just recently, when it simply stopped working the way it used to.Let me make it clear that we vacuum a lot in our household - at least once a day - so this thing got put through its paces. We're happy with what we got out of the Bissell, and will be buying another here soon.Although, we may just go ahead and get the slightly cheaper Pet Eraser (model #4101) from Walmart this time.

From the Manufacturer
Why Should I Own a Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Vacuum? Bissell has been providing quality floor care products for over 125 years. Our deep cleaning products are well known for their quality and superior performance. These same standards apply to our vacuum products as well. And, Bissell has a fully staffed consumer services department that is available to answer any of your questions.
Why is the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser a Great Vacuum for Pet Hair? The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser contains many features designed to pick up pet hair. Its superior suction, rotating brush, and pet hair lifter feature on the wide foot work together to do a great job of removing pet hair from carpets. The Pet Contour Tool bends and flexes to effectively pull out dirt and hair stuck on problem areas such as stairs, along armrests, and other curved or hard to reach surfaces. The Pet Hair Turbo brush combines a rotating brush with special rubber fingers that work as magnets to attract and pick up pet hair.
What are the Advantages of a Cyclonic Bagless Vacuum? Cyclonic cleaning technology keeps filters clean longer for superior suction power. Through cyclonic cleaning, more dirt and pet hair stays in the dirt container where it belongs, versus going to the filters. As filters clog, suction is reduced and cleaning performance drops. Therefore, by keeping filters clean longer, overall cleaning performance is improved. The other advantage of a bagless system is convenience. There are no more bags to search for, buy or change--ever! The clear dirt container allows you to see how much pet hair you have vacuumed up--and accomplished. And, with the clear dirt container it's easy to remove an object that was swept up by accident.
Features
  • Dual cyclonic power: Two stage cyclonic action provides superior suction for better dirt and pet hair pick-up.
  • Easy empty dirt container: Makes clean up a snap.
  • HEPA media filter: Captures over 99.9% of pet dander dust mites, pollens and ragweeds.
  • Pet TurboBrush: Great for your pet's favorite spot on the couch--works like a magnet.
  • Pet contour tool: Pulls out dirt and hair from hard to reach areas like stairs--bends and flexes for usability.
  • Pet Hair Lifter: Works like a lint brush--just vacuum like you normally would. The vacuum will grab pet hair when you pull back and it will release hair and suction it up when you push forward.

Shopped for a replacement for my ancient Hoover Self-propelled vacuum
This one has a number of great features I was looking for:

Easy to carry; It has handholds at the top and the bottom of the handle that make it easy to carry from room to room, as well as helping to vacuum stairs

Easy to use tools:The tools are stored at the top, and the access door flips down and away from you, allowing easy access. The hose is short, but allows me to easily snap on an attachment for cleaning off the furniture, and carpet edges.A longer hose is available as an option.I have not tried it.

Good suction thru the hose and at the powerhead.

Effective cleaning; the dirt finder light does seem to work.It stays red until is senses no particles are being pulled up.

Light weight; at least 5 lbs lighter than the self propelled version.Much easier to carry up and down the steps.
Simpler construction should last much longer than the self-propelled mechanism, too.

Easy assembly; took a whole 5 minutes.

Noise; not the quietest, but not as loud as my old Hoover

Bagged;I tried a bagless unit once... what a mess every time you have to dump the dust can. This one comes with a hepa material replaceable bag.Fill it up, dump the whole thing. No muss, no fuss...

All said, a great unit for a great price.

Bissell Velocity Dual Cyclonic Upright Vacuum - 3950 Review

Bissell Velocity Dual Cyclonic Upright Vacuum - 3950
    Average Reviews:

    (More customer reviews)
    [...]
Now to be honest, this is a girly looking vacuum. It looks kinda purplish and two toned at that, in fact, Bissell calls it a Dark Cherry Fiz color. However, my wife liked the color, so that was a selling point for her. It also weighs considerably less than the Dirt Devil did, which was also a major selling point for both my wife and myself. (Yes, I do vacuum when nagged enough!)

So I brought it home, took it out of the box, and after 3 screws and 15 minutes later, the vacuum was put together. I found the assembly very easy to do, and the instructions quite straight forward.

    Observations:
Right away I turned on the vacuum and found it very easy to maneuver. The adjustments for the floor height were easy to turn and it actually quieter than my Dirt Devil. All good things to me. Of course my wife and I took off the hose and tested the suction strength on each other, like the cheek, arm, and hair. Very impressive suction strength! Then my 2 yr. old son got upset because he thought that the vacuum was hurting us, so we stopped laughing and put the vacuum hose back.

I then vacuumed up a small patch of carpet in our spare bedroom, which I only use for my office, but right away my wife yelled at me to turn it off. She pointed out the amount of dust spiralling around the canister, which looked really cool! The cyclonic feature really works! There was a good amount of dust and debris already in the canister. We were both amazed at home much this vacuum had picked up, especially when this room had been vacuumed with the Dirt Devil just last week. Also, the carpet seemed to be fluffier. The 12 amps of power and extra wide 15 inch brush are very effective at cleaning our carpets.

I was also impressed with the fact that there are 2 filters on this vacuum. One just beneath the canister and a HEPA filter on the side of the vacuum where the air is returned to the room. Also both of these filters are very easy to find, remove, and replace. The canister also is very easy to remove, clean, and replace. A simple locking arm swings to one side to release the canister, then slides back to lock it in place.

There is also an indicator which changes colors based on the quality of air flow. If it is green, then things are well and air is moving freely. If it turns red then the airflow has become reduced, and if it turns black then there is something blocking the airflow completely. It is very easy to remove the entire hose, you just simply turn the hose on the back of the vacuum until it releases the hose, then you can clear away any blockages that might be in the way.

The hose is 14 feet long. However, I have not needed to use this feature as of yet, but it is very flexible and stretches easily. The Bissell Velocity Vacuum also comes complete with the dusting brush, TurboBrush, Curved Hose Wand, Extension Wand, and Crevice Tool. The power chord is extremely long at 35 feet, but can be a hassle when you only need a small amount of it for a smaller room. However, it is great when vacuuming a large room, or multiple rooms close to each other!

The TurboBrush also works great. I used it to vacuum off the stairs and my car. Again the 12 amps of suction strength is evident when the brush gets up to full speed. It really spins fast! I can even press it fairly strong into the carpet and it still spins.

There was mention that this vacuum seemed to tip over easily, and that is true. I tested this out on both carpet and bare floor. A good nudge or bump anywhere above the Turbo brush will send it falling backwards. Locking wheels would probably have helped in keeping this from happening. If you are going to be pulling on the hose to bring the vacuum closer to you, it is best to do this if the hose is attached to the handle at the bottom of the vacuum. However, I would not recommend this type of action.

Some people had issues with the power switch being on the front of the vacuum. This is not an issue for me. It is near enough the handle that it takes nothing to reach down and flip it off.

    Conclusion
There isn't much about this vacuum that I don't like. It is lightweight, powerful, and easy to use. It is a little back heavy and can tip over fairly easily, and the power chord can be a nuisance because of its length, but those are minor problems.

For the money, you really can't go wrong with this vacuum. It will leave your carpets clean, fluffed, and your air filtered. What more can you ask for?
