Hoover Windtunnel Anniversary Upright Vacuum, Bagless, U5786900 Review

Hoover Windtunnel Anniversary Upright Vacuum, Bagless, U5786900

I highly recommend this vacuum. I received it two weeks ago after purchasing on Amazon and it is hands down the most superior vacuum I have ever owned, and definitely outperforms other vacuums I have paid a lot more for.

I always shop the field and do fairly extensive research for all consumer purchases. We consulted Consumer Reports and this model ranked fairly high in overall performance yet had a reasonable price tag. We have about 1800 square feet of carpet, most of it medium-pile. We have one australian shepard, three manx cats, and a two-year-old child, so pet hair and dander pick-up were important to us, as well as filtering.

This model comes in a bagged version, the bagless version (the one I bought), and a bagless self-propelled version. I found the bagged version in some local stores, but I am not interested in a bagged vacuum. My local Costco carried the self-propelled version, but it was very very heavy and besides I just don't understand why the self-propelled feature even exists.

This vacuum is very quiet for it's power. It has exceedingly powerful suction. The dirt sensor has two modes - normal and sensitive. The sensitive setting is truly microscopically sensitive. The vacuum is relatively light weight for its size. Either way, this feature works and it is helpful in high-traffic areas.

Best Feature #1: The canister is almost "self-cleaning". You have to see it to understand, but there are two chambers...the first chamber contains the primary filter, and then all the medium and course particulate and hair and whatnot fill the second chamber. To empty, you just drop the bottom like most canisters, but the difference is that there is nothing in the second chamber for the course matter to get caught up on so it just empties right out without your having to fuss with it, and then the filter (this is genius) rotates via an exterior handle that unfolds from the canister. You spin the filter, and it spins against a plastic tab inside the canister, causing all the fine particulate to just drop out the bottom. When you are done you canister is almost brand new again, and you are dust-free and NOT breathing a bunch of crap!

Best Feature #2: I don't know how this is happening, but this vacuum rolls so easily it FEELS like it is self-propelled. Only it's not. I think it must have exceedingly high quality wheels.

Our house smells better after running this vacuum. We breath easier. This vacuum is so good I would by it new every six months if I had to. We paid about $180 with shipping, an absolute bargain given its performance and features. Oh yeah, the detachable pet hair attachment actually works!

Product Description:
Equipped with patented WindTunnel technology, this bagless upright vacuum delivers powerful, deep-down cleaning performance. It uses three distinct air channels to lift and trap dirt, keeping it from scattering back into the carpet, so dirt ends up in the cleaner not on the floor. With red and green lights, its embedded DirtFinder system indicates areas that may need more cleaning attention. The green "clean" light remains on while vacuuming except when the detector senses a larger amount of dirt; then the red "dirty" light will illuminate to suggest additional vacuuming in the area until the light changes back to green. The unit also traps 99.97-percent of dust and pollens down to 0.3 microns in size thanks to its HEPA filter. Even more, it provides a deluxe stretch hose, a complete on-board tool set for above-floor cleaning, and a pet-hair tool with rotating brushes that effectively removes stubborn pet hair and dirt from upholstery and carpeted stairs. Other thoughtful details include non-marring wheels with bearings for lower push effort on carpet and safe use on bare floors, an ergonomic D-grip handle for added comfort and control, and a bottom-empty dirt container that helps keep hands clean. The unit also comes with fingertip on/off power control, five-position height adjustment, edge-cleaning bristles, and a no-touch filter-cleaning system for enhanced performance, as well as a headlight and a 31-foot power cord. The vacuum cleaner measures 13 by 15 by 45 inches and carries a three-year limited warranty.

Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Upright Vacuum, Bagged, U5491900 Review

Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Upright Vacuum, Bagged, U5491900
Average Reviews:

Shopped for a replacement for my ancient Hoover Self-propelled vacuum
This one has a number of great features I was looking for:

Easy to carry;It has handholds at the top and the bottom of the handle that make it easy to carry from room to room, as well as helping to vacuum stairs

Easy to use tools:The tools are stored at the top, and the access door flips down and away from you, allowing easy access.The hose is short, but allows me to easily snap on an attachment for cleaning off the furniture, and carpet edges.A longer hose is available as an option.I have not tried it.

Good suction thru the hose and at the powerhead.

Effective cleaning; the dirt finder light does seem to work.It stays red until is senses no particles are being pulled up.

Light weight; at least 5 lbs lighter than the self propelled version.Much easier to carry up and down the steps.
Simpler construction should last much longer than the self-propelled mechanism, too.

Easy assembly; took a whole 5 minutes.

Noise; not the quietest, but not as loud as my old Hoover

Bagged;I tried a bagless unit once... what a mess every time you have to dump the dust can.This one comes with a hepa material replaceable bag.Fill it up, dump the whole thing.No muss, no fuss...

All said, a great unit for a great price.

Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Upright Vacuum, Self-Propelled, Bagged, U6485900 Review

Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Upright Vacuum, Self-Propelled, Bagged, U6485900
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this vacuum from Amazon after I had just gotten a Bissell Momentum.I thought I would like the Bissell because it was bagless, but I soon discovered what a mess it would make every time I had to empty the canister.I finally got tired of getting fine particles of dirt all over the place and decided to go back to a bagged vacuum.I chose this vacuum based on the Consumer Reports review.I did about 3 weeks worth of research prior to deciding on this particular model.I also looked at the other two Hoovers (bagged models) recommended by Consumer Reports -- the Tempo Widepath U5140-900 and the cheaper WindTunnel Anniversary U5491-900.I came very close to getting the cheaper WindTunnel when I downloaded the user's manual from Hoover and discovered the placement of the hose relative to the cord hooks.It appears as though the cord has to be wound from a high point on the handle of the vacuum to a low point at the base of the vacuum at a diagonal angle.Additionally, the cord is situated so that it crosses over the hose, which looked like an entanglement problem waiting to happen.And I did recall another reviewer having this same problem and also mentioning the awkward placement of the tools on the back of the vacuum.So, I decided to take a look at the Tempo, which has hundreds of awesome reviews.I almost went with it, except for the fact that it lacked some of the features I wanted, like a bag-full indicator light, edge cleaning, and non-marring wheels.I also discovered that the Tempo appears to be a discontinued model which even Hoover is selling at a discounted price.I didn't want to risk the potential for needing a part that might not be manufactured anymore.So I decided to go with the U6485-900 model and here is what I've found:

PROS:The hose is placed at the side of the vacuum, so there's no struggling with trying to get it back in place after removing it for cleaning;

The power cord hooks are situated in the back of the vacuum at a reasonable distance from each other, so you don't have to bend down really low to wrap the cord;

The power cord and the hose are distinctly separated from each other, so there are no entanglement issues;

The cleaning tools are perfectly placed so that they're easy to get to and do not interfere with the power cord or hose;

When the vacuum is on and locked in an upright position, the brush roll automatically stops rotating.This is such a handy feature because I'll often leave the vacuum running and propped up to go retrieve something in another room, or to use the tools to vacuum something up high.This prevents the brush roll from needlessly rotating and damaging the carpet;

The self-propel feature is awesome!I didn't purchase the vacuum for this particular feature, but I have found that I really like it!It can be turned on or off, and it feels as though the vacuum is 10 lbs. lighter when pushing it forward or pulling it backwards;

The bag-full indicator light takes the guessing out of when to change the bag.I was also surprised at the high quality of the bag -- it almost feels like thick cloth;

The vacuum came entirely assembled with the exception of the handle, which just required two screws.All of the accessory parts and bag/filters were installed, so there was no guesswork about where the cleaning tools are supposed to be stored;

Lastly, it performs fantastically!The suction power is great and the brush roll spins so fast, that I had to look twice to see if it was even moving (there's a small clear window where you can actually see the brush roll).

CONS:The way it was shipped was not typical of Amazon.There was a big gash in the side of the box and I was concerned that something could have been damaged in the shipping process.However, as long as it works, I could care less about the appearance of the box;

The self-propel feature is a little jerky.It could be that I'm not used to it yet, but it seemed to suddenly jerk backwards as you're pulling the vacuum toward your body;

This vacuum is a little heavier than I would prefer, approximately 21 lbs.However, the self-propel feature seems to negate the weight while vacuuming and you can always remove some of the onboard tools;

The hose is indeed short.I noticed that other reviewers had mentioned the same thing, but I didn't pay much attention to it, since it appears that an extension hose is available for purchase.But it does seem shorter than most other upright vacuums.

Overall, this is a great vacuum.I had done several weeks of research prior to settling on this vacuum, particularly with regards to finding a good price.I looked at all of the online retailers and only found 1 that was selling it for $10 cheaper than Amazon.However, when you tack on the cost of sales tax and shipping, it was actually cheaper to purchase this vacuum through Amazon.And Amazon has always been really great about returns, so I didn't hesitate on purchasing this product through them.You can always return it if it's not what you wanted.But I have been very satisfied with it and would purchase it again.I will post a future update should anything unexpected occur with this vacuum, though I have been very pleased with it so far.Just a word of caution -- I have seen a couple of reviewers on Amazon that have posted the same negative review for multiple Hoover products.In one instance, someone had posted the same critical review for 11 different Hoover vacuums.Don't get discouraged by this; do your own research and you should be able to determine the phony reviews from the valid reviews.UPDATE 10/04/09
This vacuum is still working great, though I do not believe that the "bag full" feature is very helpful or even functional for that matter.I just replaced my first bag and it was very full, but the "bag full" indicator has remained low this entire time.Another thing I discovered is that the handle at the very top is a little wiggly.It will move slightly up and down as you're vacuuming, and if you're not careful, your fingers can possibly get pinched in there.I definitely recommend not lifting the vacuum by the handle and keeping your hands and fingers away from that gap.Also, this vacuum is rather loud.It's fine if you're just vacuuming, but if you're doing something that requires bending over or getting on the floor to use an extension part and your head is close to the vacuum, it would be very wise to wear earplugs.One final thing -- be sure to change the setting to "hard floor" before vacuuming over a bare surface.This basically keeps the brush roll from rotating, so only the suction feature is operating.A couple of times I was too lazy to change thissetting and the brush roll actually left marks on my laminate flooring.But overall, I'm still very satisfied with this vacuum.I haven't had any belts or other parts break and it's still performing as good as day one (usage approximately one time per week).

I also wanted to mention that I saw this very same vacuum selling for $168 at a large members-only warehouse "Club" store just yesterday!I was so disappointed that I spent an extra $60 more, but what can you do???Like all things, prices change and will go down the longer a product is out on the market.If you're able to find a price like that on this vacuum, I would definitely go for it.I'm even thinking of purchasing a second one because that price is so great!UPDATE 1/30/10
I've discovered that it's probably not the brush roll that's leaving marks on my laminate flooring, but rather the self-propel belt.You might want to turn off the self-propel feature when vacuuming over bare floors, especially if they're susceptible to scuffing.

Bissell Velocity Dual Cyclonic Upright Vacuum - 3950 Review

Bissell Velocity Dual Cyclonic Upright Vacuum - 3950
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
[...]
Now to be honest, this is a girly looking vacuum. It looks kinda purplish and two toned at that, in fact, Bissell calls it a Dark Cherry Fiz color. However, my wife liked the color, so that was a selling point for her. It also weighs considerably less than the Dirt Devil did, which was also a major selling point for both my wife and myself. (Yes, I do vacuum when nagged enough!)

So I brought it home, took it out of the box, and after 3 screws and 15 minutes later, the vacuum was put together. I found the assembly very easy to do, and the instructions quite straight forward.

Observations:
Right away I turned on the vacuum and found it very easy to maneuver. The adjustments for the floor height were easy to turn and it actually quieter than my Dirt Devil. All good things to me. Of course my wife and I took off the hose and tested the suction strength on each other, like the cheek, arm, and hair. Very impressive suction strength! Then my 2 yr. old son got upset because he thought that the vacuum was hurting us, so we stopped laughing and put the vacuum hose back.

I then vacuumed up a small patch of carpet in our spare bedroom, which I only use for my office, but right away my wife yelled at me to turn it off. She pointed out the amount of dust spiralling around the canister, which looked really cool! The cyclonic feature really works! There was a good amount of dust and debris already in the canister. We were both amazed at home much this vacuum had picked up, especially when this room had been vacuumed with the Dirt Devil just last week. Also, the carpet seemed to be fluffier. The 12 amps of power and extra wide 15 inch brush are very effective at cleaning our carpets.

I was also impressed with the fact that there are 2 filters on this vacuum. One just beneath the canister and a HEPA filter on the side of the vacuum where the air is returned to the room. Also both of these filters are very easy to find, remove, and replace. The canister also is very easy to remove, clean, and replace. A simple locking arm swings to one side to release the canister, then slides back to lock it in place.

There is also an indicator which changes colors based on the quality of air flow. If it is green, then things are well and air is moving freely. If it turns red then the airflow has become reduced, and if it turns black then there is something blocking the airflow completely. It is very easy to remove the entire hose, you just simply turn the hose on the back of the vacuum until it releases the hose, then you can clear away any blockages that might be in the way.

The hose is 14 feet long. However, I have not needed to use this feature as of yet, but it is very flexible and stretches easily. The Bissell Velocity Vacuum also comes complete with the dusting brush, TurboBrush, Curved Hose Wand, Extension Wand, and Crevice Tool. The power chord is extremely long at 35 feet, but can be a hassle when you only need a small amount of it for a smaller room. However, it is great when vacuuming a large room, or multiple rooms close to each other!

The TurboBrush also works great. I used it to vacuum off the stairs and my car. Again the 12 amps of suction strength is evident when the brush gets up to full speed. It really spins fast! I can even press it fairly strong into the carpet and it still spins.

There was mention that this vacuum seemed to tip over easily, and that is true. I tested this out on both carpet and bare floor. A good nudge or bump anywhere above the Turbo brush will send it falling backwards. Locking wheels would probably have helped in keeping this from happening. If you are going to be pulling on the hose to bring the vacuum closer to you, it is best to do this if the hose is attached to the handle at the bottom of the vacuum. However, I would not recommend this type of action.

Some people had issues with the power switch being on the front of the vacuum. This is not an issue for me. It is near enough the handle that it takes nothing to reach down and flip it off.

Conclusion
There isn't much about this vacuum that I don't like. It is lightweight, powerful, and easy to use. It is a little back heavy and can tip over fairly easily, and the power chord can be a nuisance because of its length, but those are minor problems.

For the money, you really can't go wrong with this vacuum. It will leave your carpets clean, fluffed, and your air filtered. What more can you ask for?

Hoover Platinum Lightweight Upright Vacuum with Canister, Bagged, UH30010COM Review

Hoover Platinum Lightweight Upright Vacuum with Canister, Bagged, UH30010COM
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hoover Platinum Lightweight Bagged Upright with Canister (UH30010COM) (3/14/09)

Overall, this is a terrific vacuum. The person who will be happiest with this combination is the person who: (1) wants a lightweight vacuum, (2) has mostly carpet in their home, (3) has carpeted stairs, and (4) uses attachments.

I liked my old vacuum, so using the LBU has been an eye-opening experience for me: I didn't realize how much effort I was exerting with my old upright with attachments - not only heavier, but so much bending and stooping to change settings or get tools.

At 11 pounds, the LBU is 2 to 3 pounds heavier- but less expensive - than competing models. Bonuses: it has a longer cord and a stair cleaning handle.

Competing models -
Hoover LBU, 11 lbs list $300/retail $300 (includes canister), 6 yr warranty
Riccar RSL5; 8 lbs list $710/ retail $500 (without canister), 3 yr warranty
Oreck XL Gold: 9 lbs list $600/ retail $500 (includes canister), 5/10 warranty
Oreck XL Platinum: 9 lbs list $800/ retail $600 (includes canister), 10 yr warranty

All of these uprights (including the LBU) are similar to commercial models, but you don't get the same auto carpet height adjustment, lifetime belt, HEPA filtration, and warranty on commercial models.

The supplementary canister has a strap and a 25 food cord.I didn't like it the first time I tried it, but the second time I adjusted the strap to fit me (DUH!), and then I LOVED it! The canister carries the crevice and brush attachments on board, so switching is easy, and the wand is extendable. (I don't use the floor tool, because I use a stick vac on my hardwoods.)

ADDED ADVICE (9/9/09): I have been using my machine about 6 months. About a month ago, I noticed that my machine was no longer expelling fresh smelling air.I assumed that although the bag was not completely full (after 5 months, in a 2800 sq ft mostly carpeted house), the dust from my 15/16yo carpets had clogged it up and so I replaced it (not bad...5 months for one bag).After replacing the bag, it still didn't smell as good as at first. Not nasty, just dusty. Hmmm. So I took out the new bag, vacuumed out the interior of the bag area (carefully, so I wouldn't damage anything), removed the base of the machine and cleaned and vacuumed that out as well (an advantage to a separate canister).

(Edit 11/13/09) That seemed to pretty much solve it for me, but I asked about it when I called about the battery for my Hoover Platinum Collection Linx Cordless Stick Vacuum) (see review), and was told that if you live in a very humid climate (like the Gulf Coast), then a cloth bag machine can develop a funky smell - especially if stored in an unventilated area - which can be treated by putting the vaccuum out in the sunshine on a hot, dry day.I was told NOT to use carpet fresh or other powders or spray fresheners (like Febreeze) because the product might build up over time and clog up the outer cloth bag.(END OF ADDED ADVICE)

If you want details about specific features, read on:

PROS

FINGERTIP CONTROLS - Wonderful.Many models have this type of control now, and now that I have used it I wouldn't buy one that didn't have it.

HEPA SYSTEM - Remarkable. My old vacuum was a HEPA model with HEPA bags, but there is no comparison to this model. The air on this vacuum comes out smelling fabulous.I bought and returned a top rated Kenmore canister that had the exact same amazingly clean exhaust (turns out I don't like using a canister), so I think this is the new hallmark of quality vacuums.

AUTO CARPET HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT - Works beautifully.I used to have to stoop down to change the carpet height adjustment on different rugs, but the LBU self-adjustment really works - no problem pushing vacuum over even the thickest pile.

CORD PLACEMENT - Smart! It comes out the behind the top of the bag rather than the bottom.This means I have even more useable cord, because I don't have to hold part of the cord up to avoid running over it.

CLEANING ABILITY - VERY effective carpet cleaner, my 15 year-old carpets look & feel (to bare feet) remarkably cleaner, and even look & feel newer. Excellent at removing pet hair from carpet. The upright is 5.5 amps with direct air flow, like the Riccar & Oreck models listed.The canister is 7 amps.(The combined total is listed in the product description - very confusing. I suppose that Hoover thought consumers want a 12 amp machine, but amps are like gas mileage; if you get more suction for less amperage it's like getting better mileage. That's good, not bad.Plus you won't blow your fuses!)

EASILY MANEUVERABLE - One expects this of a lightweight model, and all the models I tried turned easily and so forth, but the Riccar & Orecks I tried had to be kicked or tipped up over the edge of an area rug placed onto another carpet.In my home I have area rugs in several rooms on top of the wall-to-wall carpeting, and the LBU moves seamlessly over the edges (even on my thickest area rug) without needing a kick or an extra hard push.

LIFETIME LED HEADLIGHT - Brilliant! (Literally!)It is brighter than any other light I have ever had on a vacuum, and is it actually aimed at the carpet! I think having the LEDs has allowed them to aim the light better than with a standard bulb. I am sure other LED equipped models are comparable, so look for this feature,

LIFETIME BELT - YES!I've replaced SO many belts over the years and I won't have to do THAT anymore, thank goodness.

STAIR-CLEANING HANDLE - Finally. It is comfortably shaped & works well. To use competitors' models on stairs, you have to hold them by the back tube, which I've tried, and it isn't nearly as easy as using the handle. However, see cons below.

CORD RELEASE - (6/9/09 edit) I thought it didn't have one until another Amazon customer posted a commment to me (see comments) that it most certainly does; then I tried it again and VOILA! it does.Because I couldn't figure it out before, I got into the habit of just winding up the 35' cord on my arm and plopping it into the top cord holder.The LBU doesn't threaten to tip over at all when I do this, so it works just great and saves me yet another bend and stoop - but it's a good feature to have, so I'm glad the engineers didn't leave it out.

CONS

STAIR-CLEANING HANDLE - Good grief!I assume it really WAS necessary to vent the motor exhaust toward the stair-cleaning handle (!), so rather than curse the engineers, hold the handle on the right-hand side.It's big enough to do that, thank goodness.Or vacuum the stairs first, before the motor gets warm.

NO BRUSH ROLL ON/OFF - Hmmm.This is in the description (and competitors' models are the same), so it means that the vacuum is intended ONLY for people with mostly carpet.I have about 80/20 carpet/bare floor, so it works for me.I use a stick vac on my hardwood, and the other person I talked to that has hardwood floors and this vacuum says she doesn't care because her hardwood floors aren't new anyway.But if you have brand-spankin'-new hardwood floors, will you really want to use a brush-roll on them?

EXPENSIVE BAGS - Really, $5 each? But they are huge, and they are the very high quality type with fabric-like paper, so we'll see.I used to have to change my old ones ($3) fairly often, so maybe this will work out the same or even cheaper.

CARRY-STRAP FOR CANISTER - Not padded.Anyone know where I can buy a pad for a 1 ½ inch strap?

This review is longer than I would like, but since there are so few reviews out there as yet, I wanted to be thorough.Sorry for the length but hope this helps!

(7/19/2009 edit) By the way, the original price on this was $400 and now it has dropped to under $300!This is a terrific value at this price! I would be furious if I hadn't gotten a 20% discount in the first place!
